SOPHIA

That was the best sleep I’d had in months. No matter that I am on a couch, fully clothed which, by the way, is the most comfortable one I ever slept on. None of that matters; what does is that lying on the floor beside me is Griffin.

Until the pre-dawn hour, Griffin and I sat together at the kitchen table and talked; when those chairs became uncomfortable, we moved into the living room, sat on this couch, and continued our discussion.

There is no doubt in me of his feelings for me and mine for him. He has not told me he loves me. But I can feel what he has in his heart for me. As for me, I love Griffin.

We ate a late dinner, then snacked the night through. Cooking is very relaxing for me. Griffin cannot cook, but that is no matter; I will prepare the meals for the both of us.

I turn onto my side and gaze down at his handsome face. His biracial heritage is beautiful. I study his thick, curly hair, cut short on the sides. When he puts product in his hair, I have noticed that his curls lay collectively. His long, six-foot-five frame is stretched out on the rug with a blanket wrapped around his legs and bare feet.

“Good morning, Duchess,” he says and turns his head, opening his eyes.

The second his eyes open, a smile spreads broadly across my lips. “Good morn tae you tae, Detective,” I reply. I love his endearment: Duchess.

Last night, we talked extensively, and I’m happy to my heart that Griffin and I have shared our feelings and regrets. Regrets that I ran from what I didn’t quite understand of what I was feeling for him. Fortunately, he, the gentleman that he is, held back until I came around and then caught me. I don’t want feelings of a sexual nature, but those have not been the feelings I have for Griffin, I’m sure of it. It’s love.

I say it before my mind is able to process it. “I love you, Griffin.” There, I can’t take it back.

Surprising me, he responds, “I love you, too, Sophia.” Then he reaches up to stroke my cheek.

I came to the true understanding at ten years of age—when Forrest explained to me, before my Ceremony of Heritage, as my father’s heir—that one day, the Dukedom title, which has been in our family line for over five hundred years, can only pass to a legitimate heir. Though Forrest was born on the other side of the blanket, my father legitimized him. As his lady mother says it, she refused to marry my father because she did not love the man enough to, thereby saving them both a life of remorse.

This means no never-mind to Forrest. Though he has never wanted our father’s title, Forrest will not escape his noble blood. Forrest’s lady mother holds her family’s Earldom title, inherited from her father. Thus, Forrest will one day inherit his grandfather’s title.
